Error message when posting? Read here! (was: Forum issue)

Postby r.rosati » Feb 14 2011 10:01 am

Edit: New! Shorter!

If you recently got an error page when trying to post a message on the Forums, this post is for you.

For unknown causes (likely a conflict between phpBB and security software), some users can't post messages that contain both of two things: 1) apostrophes ' or quotes " plus 2) a "command-like" word (i.e. we know of "f i n d" or "c o n t r o l").
Some moderators are experiencing the same problem, so we know how frustrating this is, and we are deeply sorry.
The server administrators are working to identify and fix the problem ASAP, but in the meantime, one way to be sure that you post will succeed is to remove all quotation marks and apostrophes from the message.

We would also like to ask your help and feedback. Can you post the following line? (remove the spaces inside the word)
I can't f i n d it!
Could you reply to this post telling us whether you could post this or not?
You might also state your OS and browser, if you wish. (but the word "expl orer" will crash the post, so write IE instead).

Thank you,

Roberto Rosati

I'll go first.
I can't post that line, and my machines use:
WinXP Professional SP3 (Ie 7)
Win7 Starter (Ie 8, Firefox 3.6, Chrome 9).

Hi.
I can not post with
Firefox 3.6.13 or Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13 / Microsoft Windows XP Professional 2002
nor with a MacBook Pro a OS10.6.3.

P.S. I had to change the third and fourth words of this post from a contraction to the current form to get it all to post, and that is a common contraction.

Ok, we have other two "forbidden" words:
"e x p l o r e r" and "P S".

Ok, we have other two "forbidden" words:
"e x p l o r e r" and "P S".[/quote]
The words I'm adding are "can't" and "that's" (I have been editing my post; check back to how it is now). Err, umm, I don't know why I was just able to edit this post to put the apostrophe in. I still can't edit my earlier post to change it to apostrophe'd contractions. For some reason in this post now I can go wild with apostrophes and quotes, while I can't in the same word elsewhere. I'm going back and forth form FireFox to IE, but can't correlate anything.
So, the list of words that cause the issue is apostrophe followed by"
f i n d
e x p a n d
e x p l o r e r
P S
and sometimes contractions in the words
can't
that's
don't
haven't
Note that this same list of contractions can not be cut/ pasted into an edit of my previous posting above.

To mchlbrmn: yes I understand, but it's not the words "can't" and "that's" that prevent posting. But they do have apostrophes, so if *anywhere* down that you place an issue-related word, then posting will fail. If you remove all apostrophes and quotation marks from a post, it should never fail, no matter the content (in words).
Thanks for pointing this out, I'll make this clear in my first post.

I just edited above here again, about contractions.
What does "so if *anywhere* down that you place an issue-related word," mean?

To mchlbrmn: I'll explain. The failure in posting is caused by the combination apostrophe (or quotes) plus word.
The word (f ind, e xpand, e xplorer, and so on) can be anywhere in the post after the apostrophe, not necessarily close to it.
I.e if I wrote right here the word explo.rer, the post would fail, because some lines above there's an apostrophe ("I'll explain").
Apostrophe + word = crash. Just the apostrophe, or just the word, is still ok.

I understand. And the triggering word can be before the apostrophe also. So, I see you substituted Xxx s for the triggering words when you quoted my post because the quotation mark the computer inserted in the process of quoting me set off the problem.

Is it possible these words are included in some computer language or syntax and we are inadvertently making some kind of command?

It seems the problem (with "s or 's and certain words (find, control, ps, and etc.) causing posts to be rejected) has been fixed.
