Cell proliferation assays measure the number of live cells and cytotoxicity assays measure the number of dead cells. However, cell proliferation assays, such as MTT or MTS assays, can also be used to measure the decrease of live cells, and hence the cytotoxic effect of the test substance. There are specific cytotoxicity assays, e.g. LDH-based cytotoxicity assay measures the amount of LDH leaked out from dead cells into the medium.
